  • Welcome

“I began my professional photography career shooting rock climbers scaling cliffs throughout the U.S. By combining my passion for adventure with my love of art and design, I very quickly became obsessed with creating images that were not only “pretty” but conveyed a sense of “being there” and of the emotions felt by my subjects. Seeing and capturing fleeting moments from behind a lens proved to be a powerful addiction which led me to portraiture and wedding photography. On the wedding day, I strive to create images of a bride and groom that show the spectrum of emotions felt on one of the most important days of their lives.”

Eric lives near the seacoast of New Hampshire with his wife Rebecca, daughter Abigail and son Colin.

They’re all grown up

As I prepare for the my 2012 wedding season to kick off in force, I thought it would be a good idea to share the last of my 2011 shoots. On a rather chilly day last Fall I met up with the Gaudet family. We were very limited when it came to when we could shoot, so we crossed our fingers and hoped for the best. You see, the family was coming together for Thanksgiving from all over the country. It turned out that although it the day was chilly, the sun was shining and the day gorgeous. So, I’d like to introduce a wonderful New Hampshire family…

This family session started with portraits of all of the children and their spouses or significant others. In this case, a mini psuedo engagement session…

The oldest brother and his expecting wife…

Their lovely daughter who was glowing…

The other son and his beautiful family…

Mom and dad, and the organizers of the day…

The two grandchildren were little spitfires, and really fun to photograph…

I had a great time spending the evening with this wonderful family. Thanks for sharing a little bot of your holiday get together with me!

Chris & David: A Portsmouth Winter Wedding

In February I was excited to be joining Christine and David for their winter wedding at St. John’s Church in downtown Portsmouth, NH. Theirs would be an intimate affair with only their families and few closest friends making up the guest list.

I was to join them for only a couple of hour, so started a little early to be able to capture the church during dusk…

I was glad that I did so because in February it gets dark quickly!

Despite the cold outside, inside the church was filled with a warm glow that made you mostly forget about the chill outside…

Prior to the ceremony, Chris and David were mingling with their guests and each other…

At the appointed time, Chris and David walked down the aisle together, hand in hand, to the front of the beautiful church…

Throughout the ceremony, David and Chris stole glances between one another, little moments that I love capturing…

Near the end of the ceremony, guests were invited to come forward and surround them at the head of the church. This afforded me the opportunity to move forward myself and capture some angles that I usually am not able to…

And of course, the ceremony ended with a kiss…

Due to the cold and the darkness, we opted to do some portraits inside the church following the ceremony. Below are a few of my favorites…

With portraits and family pictures done, Chris and David had made plans to launch candle lanterns from Prescott Park. All of the guests wrote wishes for the newlyweds on the lanterns. Chris and David prepared a lantern too…

In light of the cold, wind, darkness and six block walk to the park, plans were changed to launch the lanterns from the backyard of the church. Although the goal of launching all the lanterns at once proved to be a better idea than reality due to the wind, everyone banded together to launch them one at a time…

I am pretty sure the wind made the whole thing more entertaining…

The image below is my favorite portrait of Chris and David, captured as they released their wedding day wished to one another into the February night winds…

Thank you so much to Chris and David for including me in their celebration!

Nice work man!

Katie & Matt: A Mount Washington Hotel Wedding

Honestly, I can’t get enough of this years winter weddings at the Mount Washington Hotel! I always love shooting at the Hotel, and every season brings with it a uniqueness all its own. It’s also no secret that I love winter probably above all other seasons. So, Katie and Matt’s late January wedding was one I was very much looking forward to, especially because it was a mid-day event, which allowed for lots of sunlight to work with. When I arrived, Mt. Washington was still shrouded in clouds, but I remained optimistic for our views later that day…

The clouds were burning off and it looked like we were going to be in store for a blue bird day…

Only at the Mount Washington Hotel can you step out of an alpine environment (complete with cairns) and walk right into grand elegance…

After strolling around the Hotel for a bit, it was time to go find Katie. I arrived to a lot of energy and some beautiful details. Flours were by the very talented Sara Severance, Floral Director at the Hotel…

Here’s Katie…

A little makeup touch-up…

Dress detail…

Earlier in the Fall Katie’s father had become ill. I was excited to see him here and everyone in good health. Katie and her father were adorable together…

The ring bearer. “Hi…”

“These smell good…”

With everyone present and accounted for, it was time to go…

I have photographed a lot of weddings at the Mount Washington Hotel, but this was the first time for me where the ceremony was off-site. We headed up the road to St. Patrick’s Parish in Twin Mountain, about 5 minutes away. St. Patrick’s is a beautiful little stone church nestled in the valley…

Almost ready…

I met Matt at the church. He was bursting with excitement, eager to see Katie…

So happy…

Katie sharing a moment with her sister during the service…

The kiss, and I just love the one on the right as Matt acknowledges their guests!

Could the day have gotten any nicer for their exit from the church?

Katie and Matt arranged for a sleigh ride right after the ceremony. I was able to grab a few images as they took off into the woods…

And then I raced several miles down the road to see them re-emerging…

I tagged along for a few minutes before hopping out again to let them finish their ride alone…

Matt, always the gentleman…

Back at the Hotel, the weather was simply amazing. While gathering family and friends for portraits, I composed this multi-image panoramic of the Presidential Range. Crawford Notch is on the far right; Mt. Washington is the tall, snowy mass in the center left…

We were able to take all of the group portraits out on the Jewel Terrace, which was a nice treat in January! I was also able to spend time with the newlyweds after everyone else went in for the cocktail hour. A winter wedding in the Whites DOES NOT get better than this…

Before heading in ourselves, we stopped on the large veranda porch for just a couple of more portraits with Mt. Washington starting to be lit by alpenglow behind them…

Back inside, I headed to the Sun Dining Room where the reception was to be held. Here are a few details. The intricacy in the architecture in this room is gorgeous…

The big introduction…

Followed by the first dance… er, I mean a flag football?!?! As big football fans, the wedding party surprised and delighted the guests with a surprise Hail Mary pass by Katie as Matt went deep into the dining room!

THEN it was time for their first dance as husband and wife. The flower girl and ring bearers joined in as well…

Dancing was followed by toasts…

And thus ended my evening. Katie and Matt and their guests went on to enjoy dinner followed by dancing into the evening. As I headed home, though, I stopped for a few night portraits. The Hotel all lit up and surrounded by snow was simply breathtaking…

Thank you Katie and Matt for having me to your magical winter wedding. You both were wonderful to work with, and I just loved so much about your day and spending it with you and your families.

Eric McCallister Photography Studio Tour

Welcome to the home of Eric McCallister Photography! I thought it would be fun to share a little peek into my home studio/meeting space. This home studio has become a vital part of operating my business, as well as a major contributor to the overall happiness of our family… which became doubly clear when we flooded a year ago due to construction nearby. The water issue is resolved, and doors are again open. Come on in!

Here’s my office space. If you haven’t gathered by now, I am a climber. I’ll often say climber first, until my wife reminds me that I am also a father and a husband, but a climber none the less! In my office hangs some of my favorite photographs from destinations like Yosemite, Wyoming, southern Utah and West Virginia, as well as several nearer to home. Also, I have a few prints hanging up that were given to me by other fab photogs. When I am churning away in front of my monitors, these images remind me where I started and why I work so hard…

An alternate view of the office. The built-in bookshelf was my coup de grace when I built this space. The top shelf houses some of the best mountain literature of all time — from Messner to Curran, and Breashears to Wilkinson (my most recent read; well done Freddie!). The second shelf is all guidebooks — from local crags to world-class destinations. These shelves contain much of my inspiration in life…

A few prints — Goback Mountain in NH, Castleton Tower in UT, and a print given to me by photographer Stewart Green signed by the collaborators of the famed first ascent of Super Crack in Indian Creek, UT…

I found this rusty old knife blade piton on one of my first trips to Cannon Mountain in NH. It’s now found a new home nestled amongst some of the New River Gorge’s famed Nuttall sandstone, my favorite rock anywhere!

To me, the centerpiece of my home studio is the climbing gym. I’ve surrounded myself with climbing, so it only makes sense to have a gym where I can procrastinate too! However, I’ve not forgotten that this space is most importantly a place to meet and forge relationships with my wedding clients…

Here is the other half, my meeting space. A selection of large prints hangs, and it even comes equipped with a chalk board for high-level brainstorming sessions, courtesy of my daughter. This is after all a family business!

My favorite addition post flood and rebuild is the flat screen TV for showing images and slide shows. I am able to pull up just about anything for my clients; not only examples but inspiration as well…

The large display is perfect for private screenings, reviewing album selections, as well as an evening ice cream binge with my daughter! Multi-use is right for me! In the studio I also have a small selection of albums and a huge selection of album options, print samples and conversation pieces…

Having this space has really helped me in managing my business and sharing my work with clients. Although many of my clients live far away and never come by for a visit, for those that can and do having this space allows me to share with them my art, passion and about my business in a relaxed environment.

Jordan & Ian: A winter Mt. Washington Hotel Wedding

During the winter months, most days that I travel north I am aiming for some frozen icicle to climb or to scare myself silly trying to climb it. But not on this day. On this snowy day in mid-January I was driving north for Jordan and Ian’s wedding at the Mount Washington Hotel. I left extra early because of the snow, and was glad that I did because it snowed the entire way north. On the way I met up with my friend Anne Skidmore who was joining me. We arrived at the Hotel in full on winter conditions…

Arriving at Jordan’s suite, I started with a few details, including her flowers by Sarah Severance, the Hotel’s fabulous florist, as well as with Jordan’s gown…

The ladies were having a great time getting ready for the ceremony. Here Jordan is laced up and ready to go…

Final earring selection and the smile that we would see all day long!

I met Ian and the guys briefly with Anne to say hello, and I grabbed this quick group shot before heading back to Jordan’s suite…

I went back upstairs and Anne took time for more portraits with Ian and the guys…

They then headed back upstairs themselves to relax prior to the ceremony…

If you noticed, all the guys were sporting black Nike Air Jordan sneakers. Anne found this great ring shot back in Ian’s suite…

Here’s Ian wondering how the black Red Sox hat would go over at the ceremony, I presume…

Back with the ladies, and now all dressed up, we ventured outside for a few minutes for some portraits. They were all troopers because it was ridiculously cold out. I mean REALLY cold!

Jordan really wanted images outside with the White Mountains. So, while her bridesmaids went back in, she stayed for a few more minutes. The Whites were truly white this day, with just a hint of the flanks of Mount Washington peeking out below the low cloud ceiling…

Back inside, there was still a little time for a toast…

Then it was time to head to the ceremony…

The ceremony was held in the observatory, which is popular for winter weddings at the Hotel. Keeping with the Tiffany theme that you will see more of later, the observatory was adorned with silver decorations. The teal in the ceiling dome worked well too…

Jordan coming down the isle with her father…

And Ian realizing what a lucky guy he is…

More smiles. Lots and lots of smiles…

The ceremony concluded with a sand ceremony and a kiss, of course. Ian went in for the kill:-)

Hooray!

During the ceremony the skies cleared and Mt. Washington presented itself. Fortunately, all we had to do was take a step out the door of the observatory to take in this amazing view…

And, of course, we grabbed a couple of pictures too…

Back inside, we got through all of the family and group portraits and then I was able to spend a little time with Jordan and Ian for some portraits…

The warm light in the lobby of the Hotel let you forget that it was frigid outside…

So, what did we do? We went back outside to remind ourselves that this was a winter wedding! What good sports!

At this time, back inside, Anne was busy capturing details in the Grand Ballroom. I mentioned the Tiffany theme, right? Great shots, Anne!

Crystals and teal boxes adorned each table…

Following introductions, it was time for the first dance as husband and wife…

And then parent dances. Here is Jordan and her father and Ian and his mom…

I love this image of Jordan watching the mother/son dance…

A few toasts; this one by Jordan’s father…

As well as the best man and maid of honor…

Cheers!

Tiffany themed cake, of course!

And what to do with a Tiffany themed cake? Smash it up your bride’s nose, of course! Don’t worry, she got her payback a minute later.

Then the music and dancing kicked off in full swing…

Here is a final image of Jordan and Ian late in the evening, enjoying their party and each other…

Than you Jordan and Ian for having me at your wedding. And that you for being such great sports about the cold. Special thanks to Anne Skidmore for joining me for the day and for your great images.
